We spend a massive amount of energy managing the outside of our lives. We organise our schedules, tidy our spaces, manage our reputations, and try to fix every external problem that pops up. We operate under the assumption that if we can just get our environment perfectly ordered, we will finally feel at peace.
Yet, so many of us walk around with a quiet, constant leak of joy. We find ourselves snapping at the people we love, feeling deeply resentful of our tasks, or waking up with a heavy sense of dread. We work so hard to fix the outside while completely neglecting the inner wellspring that actually fuels our lives.
The Reality Check
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23
Your heart is the core of who you are. It is the source of your perspective, your kindness, and your resilience. If you let it become cluttered with worry or hardened by stress, everything you produce will eventually carry that same weight.
Fixing the Outside
- Believing a lighter schedule will automatically heal your frustration.
- Letting the chaos and demands of the world dictate your internal mood.
Guarding the Inside
- Recognising that peace grows from the inside out, regardless of the workload.
- Creating a quiet boundary around your mind to keep the noise out.
Guarding your heart isn’t about being defensive or closed off. It is simply knowing that your inner peace is too valuable to leave unprotected.
One Small Step Today
Sometime today, take just five minutes to sit in absolute silence. No phone, no music, no task list. Just check in on your inner self, see where the clutter has built up, and intentionally hand those heavy thoughts over to God.
A Moment to Breathe
Jesus, I admit that I spend too much time trying to fix my circumstances while ignoring my soul. Today, I choose to guard my heart. Help me to clear out the frustration and protect the peace You have given me. Amen.
