Day 1 of 31
The Posture of Awe
Proverbs 1:7
We spend a massive amount of our lives trying to be the smartest person in the room. We want to figure everything out, secure our own futures, and rely entirely on our own intellect. It is incredibly easy to slip into a mindset where we view ourselves as the ultimate authority in our own lives. We praise our own hustle, trust our own plans, and elevate our own desires above everything else.
But when we act as the center of our own universe, we slowly walk ourselves down a path of exhaustion and poor decisions. We become easily swayed by shortcuts and quick gains, and we start to view correction as an insult rather than a lifeline.
The Reality Check: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” — Proverbs 1:7
The phrase “fear of the Lord” often gets misunderstood. It doesn’t mean living in a state of distrustful, cowering terror, waiting for God to strike you down. True biblical fear is a posture of profound, reverent awe. It is the deeply grounding realization that you are not the Creator, and you don’t have to be.
It is the willingness to look at the vastness of God’s authority and willfully submit your life to the One who laid His down for you.
When we lose this sense of awe, we start acting foolishly. We ignore the quiet voice of wisdom calling out in the streets, assuming our way is better. We chase fast tracks to success that compromise our integrity. But when we start with reverence, everything else begins to align.
| The Illusion of Control | The Posture of Awe |
|---|---|
| Believing your own intellect is the highest possible authority. | Recognizing that true understanding starts with submitting to God’s design. |
| Despising correction and advice because it hurts your pride. | Welcoming instruction because you know it leads to life. |
| Elevating your own plans and praising your own independence. | Finding deep joy and relief in depending entirely on the Father. |
Wisdom isn’t just about accumulating facts or making smart career moves; it is about proper placement. When God is in His rightful place in your life—exalted, trusted, and revered—you no longer have to carry the heavy burden of playing god yourself. You find true safety not in knowing everything, but in knowing Him.
One Small Step Today: Look at a decision or a problem you are currently trying to force your way through using only your own intellect. Intentionally pause, step down from the driver’s seat, and ask God for His wisdom, acknowledging that His perspective is infinitely higher than yours.
A Moment to Breathe: Father, forgive me for the times I have elevated my own plans and intellect above Your authority. I don’t want to be foolish and despise Your instruction. Bring me back to a posture of true reverence and awe today. Help me to trust You completely as the Lord of my life, knowing that true wisdom begins the moment I surrender to You. Amen.
