We treat a lot of things in our lives as completely our own. We look at our time, our energy, our unique skills, and the plans we have carefully mapped out for the future, and we feel a strong sense of personal property over them. We built them, we earned them, or we manage them, so we assume we have the absolute right to dictate how and when they are used.
But true peace doesn’t come from defending your ownership; it comes from realizing you are a caretaker. When you hand the keys over to the One who designed your life, the heavy pressure of self-reliance disappears, and your ordinary resources become tools for an extraordinary purpose.
The Reality Check
“They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, ‘What are you doing, untying that colt?’ They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go.” – Luke 19:32-34
Before entering the city, Jesus sent two followers ahead to claim an unridden donkey for His journey. He gave them a simple, unquestionable phrase to pass along to the owners if anyone challenged them: “The Lord needs it.” The owners had every legal right to that animal. It was a valuable asset, tied safely at their doorway. Yet, the moment the true Master sent word that He had a specific purpose for it, they released it without a single argument. They recognized that their asset was actually a temporary deposit under their care, waiting for its true moment of deployment.
In total contrast to this quiet act of surrender, the city itself was completely blind to what was happening. As Jesus looked at the crowded streets, He wept openly. The people were desperate for a political leader to fix their external environment, completely missing the Prince of Peace who had arrived to heal their internal hearts. They were so busy protecting their own ideas of how things should work that they missed the very moment of their visitation.
| The Quiet Surrender | The Crowded Resistance |
|---|---|
| Handing over an everyday asset immediately because the Master had a need for it. | Clinging to a corrupted environment out of stubbornness and pride. |
| Becoming the vehicle for a purposeful, historic moment. | Missing out on true internal peace because the noise was too loud. |
The very first thing Jesus did after entering the city was walk straight into the crowded temple courts to clean out the sellers, the clutter, and the noise. He did this because a space cannot fulfill its true purpose—intimate, quiet connection with the Father—if it is constantly crowded with transactional worry and personal calculations. Before a space can be used beautifully, it must be cleansed thoroughly.
Your focus, your energy, and the quiet spaces in your schedule are the “assets” tied up at your doorway today. When the Spirit nudges you to give up a bit of your time to listen to a friend, to let go of a grudge, or to use your unique talents for something bigger than yourself, your default response shouldn’t be resistance.
True maturity is keeping your heart so sensitive that when the Master says, “I need this portion of your day,” or “I need you to clear this resentment out of your heart,” you open your hands and give Him immediate right-of-way.
One Small Step Today
Look at your day ahead and identify one specific thing you have been guarding tightly—whether it’s a tight block of your time, a personal plan, or a quiet frustration you are holding onto. Intentionally look up and say: “The Lord needs this space today,” and release it into His hands.
A Moment to Breathe
Jesus, I step back from trying to control and own every single area of my life today. Forgive me for crowding my mind with noise and treating my time as if it belongs only to me. I hand over the keys to my day, my plans, and my focus, trusting that You will use them exactly where they are needed most. Amen.
