We spend a massive portion of our lives building, collecting, and securing our position. We try to construct a perfect life–one that looks flawless on the outside and is heavily fortified against uncertainty on the inside. We gather qualifications, resources, and plans, telling ourselves a subtle lie: If I can just hold onto enough control, I will finally be safe.
But a fascinating contrast happens when we look at how different people approach true freedom. Sometimes, the things we own end up owning us, while the people who have nothing to lose are the ones who find everything.
The Reality Check
“Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” – Luke 18:22
There is a story of a young man who seemingly had it all together. He had checked every moral box since his youth and looked completely stable on the surface. Yet, when invited to take the final step of faith—to let go of his wealth and fully rely on a different kind of security—he walked away deeply sad.
His problem wasn’t just his resources; it was his identity. His achievements and his security nets were his ultimate protection layer. He wanted growth, but he wanted it as an addition to his comfort, not as a replacement for his control. When forced to choose between self-preservation and surrender, the weight of what he held kept him firmly stuck in place.
In total contrast, a blind beggar sitting by the side of the road showed what happens when we stop caring about appearances. When he heard that hope was passing by, he didn’t care about looking polite or keeping quiet. Even when the crowd sternly told him to shut up, he shouted all the more for mercy.

The beggar’s raw persistence stopped everything. He moved from sitting in the dust of the roadside to walking on the main path, completely healed. He had absolutely nothing to protect, which gave him the freedom to chase after the only relationship that mattered.
Letting go is never a net loss. There is a beautiful guarantee that whatever we leave behind for the sake of a higher purpose is restructured and given back in ways that make our lives radically richer than the ones we tried to protect on our own.
Surrender is rarely a single, dramatic event. It is a daily, quiet choice to look at our inner dashboard, open our hands, and put down our calculations. It is trusting that whatever we are asked to let go of is nothing compared to the peace we are offered in return.
One Small Step Today
Pay attention to what you are gripping tightly out of fear today–whether it is a plan, a grudge, or the need to look completely self-sufficient. Choose one area to loosen your grip, and trust that you are being taken care of without having to force the outcome.
A Moment to Breathe
Father, keep my heart soft and my hands open today. Forgive me for trusting more in my own safety nets and calculations than in Your daily care. Give me the courage to speak through the noise of my worries and to step out in faith, knowing that You are my ultimate security. Amen.
