It is incredibly easy to make promises when we are full of energy, optimism, and free time. We tell people we will show up, help out, or take on a responsibility because it feels like the right thing to do in the moment.
But then life gets heavy. The long weeks roll in, exhaustion sets in, and that commitment we made suddenly feels like a massive weight dragging us down.
When staying true to your word means losing your remaining rest, the temptation to find a clever excuse to back out is real. We live in a world that treats personal convenience as the highest priority, making it easy to justify breaking a promise. But true character is built precisely in the moments when keeping your word costs you something.
The Reality Check
“…who keeps their oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind.” — Psalm 15:4
Choosing the path of integrity doesn’t mean we can never say no; it means we value our trustworthiness more than our comfort. When we become the kind of people who fulfil our commitments even when it’s inconvenient, we build a life that is steady, reliable, and deeply anchored.
One Small Step Today
Look at the commitments you have made for this week. If there is one you are secretly hoping to drop simply because you are tired, make the conscious decision to show up and honour your word anyway.
A Moment to Breathe
Father, give me the strength to be a person of my word today. When I am tired and tempted to back out for the sake of comfort, remind me of the value of a trustworthy heart. Help me to show up well, even when it’s hard. Amen.
